Storybox Playlist: Eat All the Foods

"Eat your greens." "It's important to try new things." "One 'no thank you bite,' please". How many of you have said this to your kids? Our theme this week is to eat all the foods. We want to encourage both kids and parents to try eating all sorts of different foods.

Little House Day (from the At Home with Martin & Sylvia collection)

Martin and Sylvia are reading a book about a farming family in the ‘olden days’ who work hard, but live well in their ‘little house’ – preparing the most delicious-sounding foods! When Momma and Daddy explain that all their food was grown and raised locally, brother and sister decide to have a “Little House Day” where they eat only foods within walking distance to their house. This proves to be a creative challenge, and so they are all delighted when their farmer neighbors drop by with a special gift!

Homegrown Thanksgiving (from the At Home with Martin & Sylvia collection)

For as long as either Martin or Sylvia can remember, they have gone to their grandparents' house to celebrate Thanksgiving. But this year, their parents have decided to host the event at home. And not only is the traditional location changing, but Momma and Daddy have proposed to cook a Thanksgiving meal with only local ingredients — which means that everything they eat will come from their own garden or from farms nearby! Martin and Sylvia wonder: what in the world will they eat?

Pickles for Pickles (from the Martin & Sylvia More Adventures! collection)

Momma decides that this year's harvest will include pickling many of their extra garden vegetables. They decide to pickle cabbage for Martin and Daddy, eggs for Sylvia, and beets for Momma — but when Sylvia insists they need to pickle something for their kitty named Pickles, Momma is at a loss. She can't think of anything cats eat that could be pickled. Sylvia is determined to find something and spends the better part of a day following the kitty around seeing what she might eat.

A Kitchen of Canning (from the At Home with Martin & Sylvia collection)

It's the end of tomato season and the beginning of apple season in Martin and Sylvia's house — which means it is time to can food for the winter. When Sylvia expresses some hesitation about all the work involved, Momma inspires her sense of adventure through every step of the process — including clean up!

A Taste of the Wild (from the Junkyard Tales: All Together Now collection)

It is a beautiful summer day and Spiro decides to try something he has always wanted to do: taste a junebug grub. He knows that wild skunks who live in the forest and meadow eat grubs all the time, but he, himself, has never tried one. When he finally makes it to the meadow, digs one up and tastes his first grub, however, he learns a valuable lesson about what it is to be wild.
